Be Realistic

The first step in drawing up a successful budget is to be realistic and honest about what you spend.  A budget is to benefit you and give you financial freedom and security and if you fail to acknowledge what your expenses are you will never be able to create a budget that works.  Keep all bills and receipts and begin by adding up expenses versus income to give yourself a genuine idea of how much you spend and how much money you have available.

Take Advantage of Technology

Almost everyone these days has a smart phone and this has been recognized by mobile developers who have created money management tools that can be utilized just about anywhere.  Download an app that will help you track your spending without being a nuisance and use budgeting tools that will give you a real time indication of your financial situation.

Stick to the Plan

If you know you are overspending and incurring debt, do not buy what you can’t afford.  By drawing up a budget you have done half the work, but the most important part of successful financial management is to be disciplined and stick to your plan.  Know what you spend and implement cost cutting measures wherever possible.  Financial freedom may be tough to attain but the relief and security it offers is priceless.
